Doncaster Dragons coach, St John Ellis, believes that his squad have got what it takes to continue their successful run, which sees them in joint second place in the LHF Healthplan National League One, and win promotion to Super League this year.
‘What has pleased me most about the performances this year has been the self-belief the lads have shown. On more than one occasion this season, games have seemed lost and the boys have dug deep and pulled a result out of the bag. Had we had the rub of the green with some refereeing decisions, we should have been two points clear at the top of the table.
We have a great mix of experience and youth in the squad, and they help each other. Team spirit has never been better, and that shows on the pitch. We set a target to win the Grand Final this season, and be playing in Super league next. We are still on target,’ says a confident Ellis.
Doncaster visit Whitehaven on Sunday, who are equal on points with the Dragons, and the club are taking the fixture very seriously, travelling up to Cumbria on the Saturday, and staying overnight in St Bees on the coast. ‘ Last year we did the same and it paid dividends, some of the lads even finished up swimming in the sea. We have the use of a training pitch, and in some ways the boys get a better preparation than if they were playing at home. Whitehaven are a good side, but these are the games you have to win, if you want to win promotion,’ says Ellis.
