Leading national women’s charity, Platform 51 is set to bring festive cheer to Doncaster’s homeless this Christmas. A group of 9 young girls aged 16-19 who attend the volunteering course - delivered by Platform 51 Doncaster as part of the V24/24 volunteering programme - will host and prepare the lunch as part of the scheme’s Social Action Project initiative. Most of the girls have experienced domestic violence and homelessness in Doncaster and all are not in education, employment or training.
The lunch will be held from 2pm to 6pm at Platform 51’s Doncaster centre on Friday 28th December. A lucky mixed group of 45 of Doncaster’s young homeless will be able to tuck into a festive feast with all the trimmings. The girls are set to prepare a feast of soup followed by Xmas turkey, pork or ham and then an array of cakes and puddings. As part of the festivities, the girls will also provide seasonal entertainment in the form of a carol concert with one of the girls, who recently auditioned for X-Factor 2013, leading the proceedings.
The mixed group of 45 young homeless have been selected from Doncaster homeless agencies M25 and the Foyer as well as a number of domestic violence victims from Women’s Aid in Doncaster. Representatives from the Doncaster agencies as well as Platform 51 Doncaster staff will also attend the post-Xmas festivities.
Diane Derbyshire, Centre Manager, Platform 51 in Doncaster, commenting on the forthcoming event, said: ‘This event is of immense value not only for our invited guests but also for our girls. The girls planned and organised the event as part of their V24/24 volunteering training programme and specifically chose to give back to Doncaster young homeless and domestic violence victims as part of their own experience. The girls are also fantastic advocates for the value of Platform 51’s services in terms of helping them through their own issues and giving them the confidence to plan and host such an event for the benefit of other young people in need in Doncaster’.
