University Centre Doncaster Students had a double treat recently when they were paid a visit by two prominent professionals from the world of Football.

Paul Heckingbottom, First Team Coach, and Nathan Winder, Head of Sports Science and Medicine, both from Barnsley Football Club, came to talk to aspiring Sports Science students at the University Centre’s High Melton campus, about the paths they took in football, their job roles and responsibities, and the challenges they face in football. They spoke about the situations available to young hopefuls, and they answered the many questions put to them by the inquisitive learners.

Paul Heckingbottom has had a long career as a left back starting out at Sunderland and taking in Norwich, Sheffield Wednesday, and Barnsley amongst others clubs. He has been a coach behind the scenes for a couple of years at Barnsley and was recently made first team coach under current manager Danny Wilson.

Nathan Winder is an ex student of the BSc Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences (Top Up) programme at the University Centre Doncaster and graduated with a first class degree in 2012.

Craig Winstanley, lecturer on the course at the University Centre and sports psychologist for the U18’s and U21s squad at Barnsley said,
‘It’s a real pleasure to secure guest lecturers of such a high calibre to give a rich insight into the football world that is generally closed to the public. Lectures like this and others on the programme provide the students with quality meaningful real life experiences, which in turn are inspirational, and a great motivator for their own career goals’.
