About this Web Site

Serving the village communities of

Rossington, Armthorpe, Intake, Tickhill, Bawtry, Wadworth, and Branton
in and around Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England.

The Villager is a community newspaper which up until February 2003 was delivered free to 20,000 homes in the villages listed above once a month. In 2002 it launched this website offering both printed and electronic versions. Since 2003 when the paper version retired, the website became the only way to read the paper.

Although the printed paper was run as a commercial venture, paid for by the advertisers, it was also a community voice, allowing members of the community to air their views, pass on news, and to promote things of interest.

It was established back in 1992 by Geoff and Brenda Shaw, residents of Rossington since about 1980. There's more detail about the paper's history on our History page.

In February 2003, Geoff who ran the newspaper alone since the death of Brenda in December 2000, decided to take a well deserved break. The website however remains available and is run by Scott, Geoff & Brenda's son, on a voluntary basis.

Through the medium of the paper Geoff has promoted the Brenda Shaw Appeal for Weston Park Cancer Research to help raise funds for the Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield. Read more about it on our Appeal page.

The website relies on submissions from its visitors to provide interesting content and articles, so if you have something to say, or share, please send it in via editor@the-villager.co.uk
