A historic tree, which has stood in the grounds of Cusworth Park for over 400 years, has been targeted by vandals.
Fire officers were called to the attractive beauty spot at about 9.30pm on Monday following reports that the ancient chestnut tree had been set alight.
The tree is located at the bottom of the hanging lawn and helps add to the beauty of Cusworth Park. All trees in the park are part of a tree protection order.
Councillor Stuart Exelby, Deputy Mayor, said: ‘This is a senseless act of vandalism and it is disheartening to think there are people out there who feel compelled to act so mindlessly.
‘The tree has weathered hundreds of years and has an imposing presence in the park. Fortunately the fire was contained but if the tree had suffered more severe damage, it would have been a huge loss.
‘Cusworth has undergone extensive restoration work over the years to enhance its natural beauty. It’s a shame that there are people who just want to ruin it.’
CCTV at Cusworth has played a part in identifying culprits responsible for other anti social behaviour in the area and the individuals have subsequently been visited by officers from the local Safer Neighbourhood Team.
Cllr Exelby added: ‘We want to send out a strong message that this sort of behaviour is not acceptable. Any young people involved in negative behaviour need to be aware that all these acts of vandalism are paid for by their parents in council tax.’
