The first steps have been taken in Doncaster towards bringing in introductory tenancies – which will help to tackle nuisance neighbours living on council estates.

At a recent (January 13) Doncaster Council Cabinet meeting it was agreed that St Leger Homes of Doncaster – the organisation responsible for managing around 21,000 homes for the council – could take the first move towards introducing these ‘trial’ tenancies for new council tenants.

It means that new tenants will be on an unsecured tenancy for a one year period, which means if they cause any problems at their home, such as creating anti-social behaviour or breach their Tenancy Agreement in anyway, it is easier to evict them.

Now St Leger Homes will be sending all tenants a notice about this and they will have four weeks to give their views on the proposals.

The final stage of the implementation will be to send all tenants a notice of variation to amend their tenancy agreements. Introductory tenancies will only apply to new tenants.

Peter Davies, Mayor of Doncaster, said: 'Tackling anti-social behaviour in Doncaster is one of my top priorities.
'I am hoping that these introductory tenancies will make it easier to deal with troublemakers living in council properties.'

Susan Jordan, Chief Executive of St Leger Homes of Doncaster, said: 'We can now proceed to the next steps of this initiative. I’m sure council tenants will welcome introductory tenancies. When implemented it means we can provide more intensive management and support to new tenants to help them become good tenants and good neighbours; it also means that we can tackle new tenants who are nuisance neighbours much more easily. We will not tolerate antisocial behaviour on the estates we manage and this initiative will help us achieve quality homes in quality neighbourhoods.'

St Leger Homes is part of the Safer Doncaster Partnership – a statutory body also made up of representatives from Doncaster Council, the police, fire service, health authority and other agencies – who all work together to reduce crime and disorder in the borough.
