Commenting on the announcement that Powerfuel PLC (which Operates Hatfield Colliery) is going into administration, Councillor Jonathan Wood, Doncaster Council's Cabinet Member for Business and Regeneration, said:

‘It is disappointing news that Powerfuel PLC has been unable to secure the necessary investment but opportunities still exist for an investor to come forward. While this is a blow for the project currently no jobs are at risk at their mining and power park operations.

‘Hatfield remains a tremendous opportunity for energy related industries and all being well Carbon Capture Technology will still play an important role in Doncaster’s economic future.’

Doncaster Chamber Chief Executive Howard Gannaway said:

’Obviously the Chamber is disappointed that Powerfuel is experiencing financial difficulties but we are not overly disheartened by the news and expect Doncaster to play a key role within the development of carbon capture technology in years to come.

’Doncaster has a significant history in the energy sector and the Borough maintains a number of key assets, above and below ground, that will ensue its future in the energy industry.

’The Chamber would urge stakeholders in the public and private sectors to find an imaginative solution to the problems currently being encountered by Powerfuel and hopes that before long plans can continue apace to develop world leading technologies and create jobs in Hatfield.’
