As part of ongoing works to repair Balby New Bridge, the installation of new edge beams will see a series of weekend road closures starting Saturday, 23 July 2011.
These works had originally been planned to take place earlier this month, however they were delayed due to engineering difficulties outside the control of the council.
The crane lifts will require at least four and up to seven consecutive weekends of outbound closures over the bridge that forms part of the Balby flyover. Traffic management measures and diversions will be in place around the area. These measures will take effect from 10am on the Saturday through to 6am the following Monday. Outbound traffic will be diverted in a contra-flow arrangement onto the inbound carriageway. This will result in significant delays both into and out of town.
With ongoing gas works taking place seven days a week along the A630 Balby Road, motorists are advised to use alternative routes into Doncaster such as junctions 37 and 38 on the A1(M).
Signage on the approaches to the A630 will advise motorists of alternative routes and diversions.
The works started in September last year and concrete repairs below the bridge are complete. Preparation works have been taking place for the new beams.
Two 500 ton mobile cranes will be set up on the carriageway and working in tandem they will lift out the existing weak beams and fit new beams that strengthen the bridge. The works are linked to essential rail track possessions from Network Rail and will mean the bus lane reopens increasing road capacity in the area.
