Dozens of employers were invited to breakfast and lunch at Doncaster College’s Waterfront Restaurant recently to find out more about Apprenticeships.

Guests were treated to a buffet breakfast and lunch, prepared and served by Hospitality and Catering students, as well as gaining insightful information and guidance on funding, how apprenticeships work and courses at the College.

The two events were part of a day to promote Apprenticeships and Business Solutions at the College and were organized by the Academy of Workforce Development.

Interested employers listened to talks from Pat Meadows, Assistant Principal External Partnerships & Employer Engagement at the College, as well as speakers Mike Long from the National Apprenticeship Service, Alexander Van Steen who employs a couple of Apprentices at his company Axita, and at the lunch time event, Etta Cohen from Forward Ladies.

Guests were also given information about the Enterprise Club, which is held every two weeks at the Hub and at the FE centre in Stainforth on a Thursday. The club helps people who are thinking of starting up their own business and provides them with relevant advice and support to do this. For more information, contact Ann Jackson or Daniel Wright on 01302 558347.

A member of the Workforce Development team, Training Advisor Jenni Del Valle Woodward, 27, appeared on the Business Juice section of the ‘Simply Fred’ radio show at Sine FM.
Jenni said, ‘it was a great opportunity to make more people aware of Apprenticeship schemes and how beneficial they can be for both the learner and the employer.’

Accompanying Jenni was Laura Cook, a Level 2 Business Administration Apprentice who spoke about her experience of learning and working at Doncaster College.

Jenni told listeners how Apprenticeships are more flexible than they used to be, learners can be aged 16-65 and the schemes can be used to train existing or new members of staff. She said in this time of recession it makes a lot of sense as for every pound the government spends on apprenticeships the economy gets back forty pounds in added value.

For more information contact the Apprenticeship team on 01302 553913 or visit the College website www.don.ac.uk/apprenticeships
