Doncaster College student Lucy Broadbent has won the Northern Heat of the Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year Competition 2012.
Twenty-three year old Lucy from Sprotbrough, near Doncaster, is studying on a Level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating at the College, and will now represent Doncaster College in the final of this prestigious, national competition.
The competition was held at Doncaster College, in the painting and decorating area and was organised by Glyn Nettleton, a tutor at the College. Fifteen competitors from various colleges in the northern region attended the event. The competition required candidates to demonstrate a range of painting and decorating skills using complex measurements, different colours, straight lines and curves all produced freehand.
When asked about her victory, Lucy said, ‘It was difficult but I’m looking forward to the final. My tutor, Mark Adams, taught me everything I know, he’s brilliant.’
Mark Adams, a painting and decorating tutor, said,’ I am very proud of Lucy and what she has achieved and wish her every success in the finals competition in November 2012 at Ricoh Arena, Coventry.
‘I first met Lucy whilst she was working towards a Preparation for Employment course at Bentley Training Centre where she demonstrated excellent potential to progress within the painting and decorating industry. I encouraged her to further develop her skills by enrolling on a Level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating at Doncaster College.’
Since starting the course in September 2011, Lucy has been involved in many painting projects and most recently helped to redecorated the Stainforth FE centre for it’s relaunch as Doncaster College East.
In the future, Lucy is hoping to do the Painting and Decorating Level 2 Diploma.
