The first game of the season saw Doncaster Demons take on Mellish Ladies at Castle Park, where there was a strong rally of support meeting both teams as they entered the field. As the referee’s whistle blew to kick-off there was a fierce attack to secure the ball and push for the try-line. Within the first few minutes of the game, a scrum was called and the Demons newly fledged forwards immediately set to work guarding the ball and driving the opponent.

As this was the first time in a long time that the Demons had been able to establish a full fifteen-a-side game, and Mellish meeting this demand, it was clear that each player understood their roles and worked their way up and down the pitch in a strong, fluid formation.

Within the first fifteen minutes of the game, it was clear that the Demons were working hard and winning the ball in every scrum as all Mellish forwards could do was watch the ball be repeatedly pushed out to the back line. The opposition did put in a strong performance, displaying their commitment to achieving possession in the majority of the line-outs. However this was not to last long, as the Demons pushed forward to meet the attack and held an impenetrable line.

The second half saw the Demons slightly lack in concentration and left opportunities for Mellish to break the defensive line. Despite feeling the burn of the first game back, Demons players Becky Mainprize and Gemma French must be commended for preventing two potential tries which would have happened, if it were not for their hard work and effort in stopping the opposition in their tracks.

The final whistle blew on Doncaster Ladies spectacular performance against the opposition, claiming their first win of 31-12 on home ground.
Players of the match for the Demons were prop, Sally Wenham who put in an excellent display at tighthead as well as breaking through the Mellish defensive line on several occasions. Becky Mainprize set the tempo for the rest of the season by holding up a try and making two excellent breaks resulting in two tries.
