Sheffield City Council has launched The ‘Heroes Welcome in Sheffield’ scheme to give support, recognition and a little extra hospitality to armed forces personnel and their families. Local traders are being invited to offer members of the armed forces anything from a warm welcome to perhaps a little discount.

The scheme was launched by Councillor Clive Skelton at the Federation of Small Businesses’ networking event held at Costco Wholesale, Parkway Close, on Tuesday 13 November.

Gordon Millward, Regional Chairman of the FSB, commented:

‘This is a great scheme that recognises the efforts of servicemen and women who make massive sacrifices to protect the UK’s interests. We all owe them a debt of gratitude and if local businesses can do a little bit to make their lives and those of their families a little more comfortable then it’s well worth doing. By joining the scheme Sheffield businesses are demonstrating support to the local armed forces and offering a warm welcome and special recognition, like a small discount.

‘The FSB is committed to the principle and we want the help of our members to join the scheme and promote their contribution through the ‘Heroes Welcome in Sheffield’ website.’

The offer is individual to each business and can range from a warm welcome to a discount or free service for serving personnel. Participating businesses will be able to check if someone is serving in the armed forces as they are issued with an ID card. As well as promoting their offer on the website, businesses will be able to promote the offer by displaying a colourful window sticker which is provided to each business that joins the scheme.
