Ritchie Barker, manager of Crawley Town Football Club returned to his academic roots, to speak to graduates at the University Centre Doncaster’s Graduation at the Minster.
The ex-professional footballer, who played for Sheffield Wednesday, Doncaster, Brighton, Rotherham and Mansfield amongst others, studied at the Centre a couple of years ago.
Invited back as a guest speaker and he told students that,
‘Just over two years ago I went for an interview to become the head of the youth development at Bury FC. I was informed I was successful and that I was to be offered the job. Once I accepted and the administration was completed I threw the question ‘can I ask what set me apart from the other candidates?’
We all had the same coaching qualifications; we had very similar playing careers (though I was probably the worst). As well as telling me they were impressed with my enthusiasm, they also told me I was the only one who was interviewed who had a degree!
Ritchie told them that they all had something in common and that was a thirst for learning that, with hard work and dedication, will lead to success in their chosen field.
