Mayor of Doncaster, Peter Davies, has criticised the Government after Whitehall reports showed that only £200million of the £1billion Carbon Capture and Storage Competition funding pot is available in the current spending review casting doubts over the merits of the competition process.

Last week, Shadow Energy Minister, Tom Greatex MP, revealed the news at Energy Questions.

Mayor of Doncaster, Peter Davies, said: ‘The truth is finally coming out on the Government’s Carbon Capture and Storage competition debacle.

‘I said from the start that there must be more to their shocking decision than just a simple case of ‘winners and losers’ and I have been proved right.

‘This so called £1billion competition was launched under false pretences with the vast majority of funding not available for a number of years.

‘It was always going to be impossible for the best project in Europe and the most advanced project in terms of being ‘shovel ready’ to gain the support it needed as they simply didn’t have the money available.

‘Doncaster and Yorkshire should be leading the way across Europe in terms of this new technology but it appears that the Treasury has stepped in and blocked real progress.

‘The Government keeps stating they are for jobs and growth today but they then make a horrendous decision that takes this industry back to the development stage.

‘The shambolic decision making prevents the UK and the region benefitting from £1billion of Korean inward investment and the creation of thousands of jobs.

‘I am appalled by the news.’
