Postcode Lotteries has been announced as the world’s third largest private donor after the Bill Gates Foundation and Wellcome Trust for the second year in a row. In 2012 alone the organisation awarded a total of £413 million to good causes.
Yorkshire’s wildlife is one of the benefactors of this generosity, with Yorkshire Wildlife Trust receiving £76,000 of the pot in 2012 and Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust also benefitting from support.
Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has been able to use this invaluable resource to support management of their 95 nature reserves, the majority of which can now be explored with the help of a handy guidebook, Discover Yorkshire’s Wildlife, published this Christmas. With nature reserves in throwing distance of most major towns and cities in the region, all Yorkshire men and women will have a site pretty much on their doorstep. Some of the highlights of the coming season will be kingfishers at Adel Dam near Leeds, brightly coloured siskins and roe deer at Askham Bog near York and elusive bitterns at Potteric Carr near Doncaster.
Rob Stoneman, Chief Executive of Yorkshire Wildlife Trust said:
‘In the past five years, we have added over 500 acres to our nature reserve portfolio, all of which requires crucial habitat management, as well as visitor access work. The support received from players of People’s Postcode Lottery enables us to carry out this work and is therefore vitally important to the running of the Trust.’
