Yorkshire Wildlife Trust was delighted to receive a cheque for £76,000 at People’s Postcode Lottery charity gala held in Edinburgh last week.

The funding was raised by the players of People’s Postcode Lottery and donated to Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to enable them to continue with their work to protect and conserve Yorkshire’s wild places and wildlife for all to enjoy. Amongst the charity’s activities is the management of 95 nature reserves in the region, including woodlands, wildflower meadows, wetlands and peatlands. All of these habitats are carefully managed to make the most of them for wildlife and people. Without the support of the players of People’s Postcode Lottery this would not be possible.

Dr Rob Stoneman, Chief Executive of Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, said:
‘I am delighted that the Postcode Green Trust chose to make such a significant contribution towards the management of Yorkshire’s wild places. In Yorkshire we are privileged to have a great number of diverse, stunning landscapes but these need protecting, otherwise they will not be around for future generations to enjoy. The support of People’s Postcode Lottery players is truly valued in helping us to ensure this happens.’

Thorpe Marsh Nature Reserve near Doncaster is one of the nature reserves which benefits from the support of players of People’s Postcode Lottery. The varied habitats which include hedgerows, ponds, lakes and a small woodland support a wide range of plants and animals, and guarantee any visitor an enjoyable visit throughout the year. Long-eared owls, common-spotted orchids, and in summer, a whole host of butterflies and damselflies in particular provide a great spectacle.

This special nature reserve, as well as the 94 others in Yorkshire, is an important pocket of habitat that supports a great number of Yorkshire’s species, and fits into The Wildlife Trusts vision of Living Landscapes, where wildlife friendly habitats are linked up, providing corridors for species to move along when under strain from a changing climate and new development.
