Yorkshire Wildlife Trust is asking everyone to pay some tender loving care to their garden birds.

We all know winter can be a difficult time for Yorkshire’s wildlife and at this time of year our garden birds begin to run out of options as food becomes scare.

It’s easy to help them out; if you have never fed garden birds before start off with a range of food, fruit, nuts, seed and meal worms should attract lots if different birds from robins to chaffinches. It’s important to keep the food topped up as once garden birds begin to arrive they tend to remain loyal to your garden, this is why it sometimes takes a while for garden birds to start arriving at your feeding station.

Fat balls are great, especially at this time of year. Using a simple recipe you can also have plenty of fun making them with your children on a weekend. You can of course buy them, but do remove the plastic nets they tend to come in before putting them out. Breaking them up also tends to make it easier on little beaks.

One last thing to remember is fresh water, which is as important as food at this time of year. And with this weeks chill do make sure you keep water bowl free of ice.

Find out more about the wildlife in your garden and how to make a fat ball feeder by visiting out website www.ywt.org.uk.
