For around two years I have been meeting people (around two a week on average) who are risking a £1000.00 fine without even knowing it.
I install wood burning stoves for a living, the recent massive surge in popularity for these appliances has brought with it a parallel surge of unscrupulous dealers and cowboy installers.
The whole of DMBC is a smoke control area, you can only burn wood legally on a stove which has DEFRA approval. The maximum fine for burning wood on a stove with no DEFRA approval is £1000.00. There are dealers selling stoves in Doncaster with no DEFRA approval without informing purchasers of this.
Many cowboy installers are not aware or don't care either and further compound the offence by not informing building control to inspect their work, often leaving very dangerous installations which can negate household insurance policies by being un certified.
By law all installations must be inspected by building control or certified by a tradesman who can self certify, usually a HETAS engineer.
Burning wood creates massively more carbon monoxide than burning gas and there is also a risk of a poor installation setting a house on fire. The rules are there for a reason... They save lives!!
