Doncaster Council is asking residents for their views on a new proposed cycle strategy for the borough.

The consultation is being launched on Friday 11 October with a public engagement event at Clock Corner in Doncaster town centre. Members of staff will be on hand all day to discuss proposals.

The authority is asking for views on a variety of issues including: whether cycling should be allowed in the town centre pedestrian streets? Whether there should be more cycling events? Whether more 20mph zones would benefit cyclists? And how much of a priority cycling is for residents?

Councillor Bill Mordue, Cabinet Member for Highways, Street Scene and Transportation, said: ‘The borough’s existing strategy was produced in 1994, since then Doncaster has changed considerably.

‘Two per cent of people in Doncaster currently cycle to work which is higher than other areas in South Yorkshire but we think we can improve this.

‘In the last ten years cycling has grown by over 2% each year and reflects the growing national awareness and interest in cycling as a cheap and healthy form of transport.

‘The landscape of Doncaster is largely flat which makes it ideal for cycling and we are keen to encourage residents to consider sustainable forms of transport more and more.’

The country’s success at international cycling events such as the Olympics and the Tour De France has also raised the profile of cycling with many Doncaster residents now cycling for sport and recreational reasons with a big growth of membership of local cycle clubs. Next year’s Yorkshire departure of the Tour De France will also raise the profile of cycling in Yorkshire on the world stage.

Residents can take part in the consultation at the consultation event, online at: or via social media @MyDoncaster or
