Doncaster Council’s Tourist Information Centre has won the prestigious ‘Visitor Information’ category in the White Rose Awards 2013.
The awards, organised by Welcome to Yorkshire, recognise excellence in region’s tourism. The ceremony took place at New Dock Hall in Leeds on Monday 11 November 2013.
This is the second major award for the authority’s tourism work this year. In May, Doncaster Council won gold in the national LGCommunications Reputation Awards 2013 in the ‘Place Branding’ category.
Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: ‘As part of the judging process Welcome to Yorkshire sent a mystery shopper into our tourist information centre.
‘It’s obvious that they were impressed by the quality of unique local goods on sale as well as the friendliness and passion for Doncaster shown by our staff.
‘Doncaster’s tourism profile is growing with great access with new attractions like the Yorkshire Wildlife Park and events such as the St Leger Festival Week.
‘Visits to Doncaster attractions to the end of August were up 14% on the previous year. We have been outperforming Bath, Oxford and Cambridge in terms of numbers of day trippers for the last 2 years .’
