A Wheatley shop has been closed by Doncaster Council after officers discovered droppings, chewed food and even smudge marks left by rats’ fur.

Filthy conditions were uncovered during a routine food hygiene inspection at the Brox General Store, 2 Broxholme Lane, Wheatley, Doncaster, DN1 2LJ which is run by 46 year old Galib Hussain of Beckett Road, Doncaster.

There were indications that rats had been there for some time as they had chewed through plaster and skirting boards as well as wiring. Outside access points and movement trails of the rats were identified around the premises.

To protect the general public an emergency prohibition order was confirmed by Doncaster Magistrates Court on Wednesday 13 of November.

The business has also been ordered to remove all signs of vermin activity, carry out general structural repairs and to clean and sanitise all areas of the premises. It will not be allowed to open until officers from the council’s food team are satisfied that the business no longer poses any further risk to the public.

Councillor Joe Blackham, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Enforcement and Trading Services, said: ‘Rats present a serious risk to health in food premises and it is vital that all Doncaster’s food businesses are kept free of such pests.

‘Food business owners have a legal duty to keep their premises hygienic and free of pests and any failure to do so will not be tolerated.

‘Doncaster Council takes strong action to protect the health and wellbeing of residents.’
