Szilvia Schmitsek, a PhD student at the University of Warwick, has chosen Doncaster College for her UK case study research as part of her doctorate programme.

Szilvia, originally from Hungary, is focusing her research on student retention strategies that help young people to integrate into the education system and/or the world of work, and society.

Her research will include an investigation into how three different countries focus their efforts on such strategies. The countries are: Hungary, England, and Denmark

Szilvia chose Doncaster College for her UK case study, due to the outstanding support the College offers students, particularly those who are at risk of social exclusion, and the ways the College supports them into education and work. Szilvia is specifically interested in the following factors that contribute to student retention: efficient student support, peer assistance, friendship, and individual study paths in an encouraging learning environment.

An initial visit to Doncaster College surpassed Szilvia’s expectations, ‘I immediately felt at home at the Hub because there was everything I could wish for in an encouraging learning environment: friendly and helpful people, open spaces, colourful walls, music, trendy pieces of furniture and relaxing atmosphere. I was inspired by meeting dedicated staff members, who have expertise in many different fields and passion for their job. While I was listening to their stories, I was convinced that they could solve everything.’

During her visit, Szilvia met with a number of college staff that support students including Diane Lawson, Natalie Marshall, Donna Robinson, and Jo Holt as well as the Head of the Academy of Commercial Enterprise, Gill Parkes.

The College is looking forward to working with Szilvia and being part of her important research.
