Nature and Nebulas! A Stargazing Live event – 11th January

3 pm to 6.30 pm (approximately)

Join the team at Old Moor and Mexborough and Swinton Astronomical Society for an evening of natural spectacle. Go on a guided walk to see birds come home to roost followed by stargazing at the night sky.

The evening will start with a choice of three walks to our hides to watch our wonderful winter wildfowl come in to roost. You may even see the barn owls return to their nests or even our elusive bitterns settling down in the reed beds. Following the walks the astronomy society will be on hand to show you the wonders of the night sky through their powerful telescopes. In the classroom will be amazing film footage of the stars presented by the astronomy society. Meanwhile in the visitor centre there will be a demonstration of a planetarium to show you the wider planetary systems. Up in our cafe you will be able to watch new footage of earth from the International Space Station while you warm up with soup and hot drinks.

£5 Adults, £4 RSPB Members, £3 children (under 5’s go free). All proceeds go to support the work of the two charities.

Birdwatching for Families 18th January

Session One – 10 am to 11.30pm
Session Two – 12.30 pm to 2.00 pm

Get ready for the world’s biggest garden bird survey with our special event designed to help you tell a bullfinch from a robin or a great tit from a coal tit. Come along to the reserve and gain special access to our education hide and watch the colourful garden birds before making your own bird feeder to take away and attract feathered friends to your own garden.

The event is free but donations are welcome to cover materials.
Booking is essential as there is limited room in the hide. Call 01226 751593 to reserve your place.

Big Garden Birdwatch 25th – 26th January

Drop into the reserve to see what garden birds have visited us during the Big Garden Birdwatch. There will be plenty of help on hand to identify the birds that you have seen in your garden, give advice on feeding garden birds, and to help you join in with the worlds biggest garden bird survey.

February Half Term w/c 24th February

All of the events are free, but our reserve entry fee applies: £4 adults, £2 children, £8 family ticket. Activity backpacks are available to hire.

Monday - Drawing and Discovery Day - Our activity centre will be open for self lead crafts all about homes for wildlife.
