The first major event of the St Leger Festival Week 2014 has been announced. It comes as Doncaster Council releases its latest ‘Seven Wonders of Doncaster’ video which celebrates the world’s oldest classic horse race.
The British Jet Ski Championships will take place on the 5, 6 and 7 September 2014 at the Lakeside in Doncaster. Last August the European Championships were held in Doncaster. This was the first time that the competition had been held in the UK for a decade. More than 300 competitors and 4,000 spectators turned out for the event which gave Doncaster’s economy an estimated three quarter of a million pound boost.
Doncaster Council is currently promoting a wacky video campaign on social media, in response to an advert by Kellogg’s about a fictitious tourism attraction in Doncaster. The films follow the story of a traveller called Henry who is stuck in Doncaster for the day and is amazed by how much there is to see and do.
The latest video sees Henry learning about Doncaster Racecourse and imagining what it would be like to run in the St Leger Stakes.
Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: ‘The St Leger Festival Week 2014 is still very much in the early stages of planning but the announcement of the Jet Ski championship is an exciting development.
‘The first four ‘Seven Wonders’ videos have now been viewed more than 4,000 times on YouTube. The films have been seen as far afield as Australia, Bangladesh, Japan, Morocco, UAE and USA.’
