Thousands of visually and mobility impaired people are facing a vital cut across South Yorkshire on their travel passes. From March 31st, they will no longer be able to use their pass before 9:30am and after 11:00pm. I imagine many, especially those on low wages and hours, will be forced to give up work as they will be unable to meet the travel costs.
They also face the loss of concessionary travel on trains in South Yorkshire and on Network Rail services from South Yorkshire to West Yorkshire. Again, I imagine this will have a massive impact on the those who are on low incomes and hours but it will also greatly impact those who use the services on a regular basis to attend appointments at any of the Sheffield or Leeds hospitals.
I am visually impaired and, as a result, I am not allowed to drive. Therefore, I rely heavily on public transport to get me from A to B. I realise that I am still able to do this but my employment options have been limited as a result. Just recently, I have had to withdraw an application and attendance for an interview in Leeds because I would not be able to afford the monthly travel cost had I been the successful candidate.
I have emailed SYPTE regarding this but have had no response from them. I believe this cut is a cut too far and it will greatly affect the lives of thousands.
