New higher fines introduced for fly tippers have come into force this week in Doncaster.

The new guidelines, set out by the Sentencing Council, will see fly tippers and offenders whose crimes involve noise nuisance, smoke or carry a health risk also being hit by the harsher fines.

This week saw Rebecca Lea Knighton of Clarence Avenue, Balby, charged with depositing and leaving waste at Clarence Avenue, Balby on the 9th August 2013. She did not attend Court so the case was proven in her absence. She was fined £400.00 ordered to pay costs of £145.00 and Victim Surcharge of £40.00. A Collection Order was made for payment in 28 days.

Councillor Joe Blackham, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Trading Services said ‘This is a fantastic result which sends the message out strong and clear that residents who spoil Doncaster will pay the penalty.’

The Sentencing Council said it wanted magistrates to make more use of the ‘highest levels of fines’.

Cllr Blackham added ‘Anyone with knowledge of fly tipping is urged to come forward and report it to us, and trained officers will do their best in each case to find evidence to make a prosecution.’
