Doncaster Council is working in partnership with local cycling clubs to host the town’s first ever programme of cycling events.
Get Doncaster Cycling will promote a range different opportunities available for all ages and abilities throughout the borough.
The first cycle ride took place on Sunday 6 April with ‘Woo Woo Wheelers Sunday tow path trail’ meeting at Kirk Sandall train station car park. Further rides have been organised by Doncaster Wheelers , Rossington Wheelers, Cycle Supreme and Tickhill Velo.
Councillor Pat Knight, Cabinet Member said ‘Cycling is a fun way to get fit and enjoy the Doncaster landscape either alone or with a group. The cycle groups will benefit those who aren’t very confident about riding alone to go out and get involved. The excitement of the Tour de France coming through Yorkshire and Doncaster’s first ever program of cycling events should inspire people to take to their bikes.’
Director of Public Health, Tony Baxter said: ‘Get Doncaster Cycling is a great way to encourage residents to get on their bike. Cycling is a healthy way to spend time with the family, save money and be environmentally friendly. Using our bikes for our short journeys can also help people reach the national recommendations for physical activity of 150 minutes per week for adults and keep fit and healthy. We are keen to get more people of all ages and abilities to use their bikes more often. It doesn’t matter if you are a keen cycler or just want to get back into the saddle.’
