Doncaster Council's Museum Service is delighted to announce that it has recently been awarded £8,500 by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), through their Sharing Heritage programme to allow the museum service to deliver an exhibition and a range of events focusing on cycling, which will coincide with the start of the Tour de France in Yorkshire.

The exhibition will celebrate the role of cycling in Doncaster, with historic artefacts drawn from the collection of Doncaster Museum Service, shown alongside loans from members of the local public, while a number of events will take place over the summer in the parkland surrounding Cusworth Hall.

Sharing Heritage is a new funding programme to help people across the UK explore, conserve and share all aspects of the history and character of their local area.

Councillor Bob Johnson, Cabinet Member for Tourism, said: ‘We are absolutely delighted that we have been awarded this grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund, as it will allow us to explore the variety of different ways that cycling has played, and continues to play in the life of the people of Doncaster. The mixture of museum collections, with loaned items from members of the public, and a range of events in the parkland at Cusworth Hall means that there will be something for everyone to enjoy.’

Fiona Spiers, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund, Yorkshire and the Humber said: ‘Sharing Heritage is a wonderful opportunity for communities to delve into their local heritage and we are delighted to be able to offer this grant so that people in Doncaster can embark on a real journey of discovery. Heritage means such different things to different people, and HLF’s funding offers a wealth of opportunities for groups to explore and celebrate what’s important to them in their area.’
