The much needed transformation of Doncaster's dated outdoor market gets underway over the weekend.

By Tuesday many of the market's old and dilapidated stalls will have been cleared ready for works to begin on repaving the Market Place and constructing smart new stalls.

However, it will be very much business as usual for existing traders who are being temporarily relocated to stalls in front of the Corn Exchange or opposite the Red Lion.

The £1 million scheme - the design of which has been worked up using input from market traders - will provide new stalls with improved lighting and better weather protection for shoppers, open up clear pedestrian routes through to the Wool Market and create an attractive new square designed to host a range of specialist markets and events.

Prominent signage will be erected around the market in advance of the start of works on site and staff will be on hand on each market day to ensure shoppers can find all their favourite stalls.

Director of Regeneration and Environment Peter Dale, said: ‘Our award-winning markets are vital to the town centre economy, providing employment for around 1000 people. Tourism continues to increase - up 12.4% in the past year - and the markets are one of our most popular visitor attractions, welcoming coach trippers from far and wide every week. This significant investment in improvements will benefit traders, residents and visitors alike. Doncaster Council is committed to supporting markets and driving forward regeneration, jobs and growth across the entire borough.’
