Sue Kent, a Sports Massage Therapist, visited Doncaster College recently, to offer expert tips to students

Sue is a therapist with a difference, she is the first person in the UK to offer Sports Massage using feet only due to an upper limb disability, and she uses her feet and toes to provide a unique massage service.

Sue said ‘As a result of the Thalidomide drug, I have an short arms, this upper limb disability means that with arms eight inches long and only seven fingers I cannot use my hands to massage.
I started to use my feet in massage 8 years ago and have been developing my skills and techniques over this period. I researched the market place looking for existing techniques but found none that used just feet and toes to give body massage.

Sue was also the first person to provide massage by feet for the Paralympics 2012, challenging and changing attitudes to ability worldwide.
‘I was very proud to have worked at the Paralympics’she said.

Karen Gregory, Lecturer at the College said,
’Having Sue come and work with the students expands their knowledge of different types of massage and give them an insight into working in a constructive and practical way with people with disabilities. The issues and history surrounding the Thalidomide drug are not as prominent in the news now and Sue has expanded the student’s knowledge of its affects and their awareness of equality and diversity. Sue has been a great motivator and her drive and motivation is infectious.’

The students, who were from the NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Spa Therapies course, were able to have a go at the special techniques that Sue employs and they were very enthusiastic, Student Brogan Bush said,
‘I had a really good afternoon with Sue learning to massage with feet. Sue was very friendly and the experience was great.’
Ewa Litkowiec, said, ‘I really enjoyed it Sue was inspirational and it was great to see how massage can be adapted.’
And Eilish Murphy said, ‘I really enjoyed learning how to do massage without using hands and also enjoyed listening to Sue’s story and how she came to do massage.’
