It is the small things that count and can help people live well with dementia.

That is why the Doncaster Dementia Strategic Partnership (DDSP), supported by the Doncaster Dementia Action Alliance, is working hard to help the town become a Dementia Friendly Community.

The DDSP, along with other members of the Action Alliance, is supporting the new national Dementia Friends campaign which aims to help people ‘get by with a little help from their friends.’

Public Health England and Alzheimer’s Society have come together to inspire the Dementia Friends campaign which is encouraging people in Doncaster to become a Dementia Friend. People can become a Dementia Friend in a number of ways including attending a session run by a Dementia Friends Champion and watching an interactive video online to increase their understanding of dementia.

The campaign aims to create a network of one million Dementia Friends across England by 2015. As part of the campaign, adverts will appear on TV and in the press from 7 May 2014. Information about the campaign will appear across the borough.

Using The Beatles’ famous song With a Little Help from my Friends the adverts explain how people can help others by developing an understanding of dementia through becoming a Dementia Friend.

Dr Tony Baxter, Doncaster Council Director of Public Health, said: ‘This national campaign aims to encourage more people to become Dementia Friends. Becoming a Dementia Friend involves gaining a basic awareness of issues surrounding dementia.

‘Dementia Friends is an important part of our work with our partners to help people live well with dementia and towards Doncaster becoming a Dementia Friendly Community. Many people at the council have now become Dementia Friends by taking part in a Dementia Friend session, which are being delivered across the borough.’
