Local authorities across South Yorkshire have joined forces for the first time to launch a pioneering fostering recruitment campaign during Foster Care Fortnight 2014.

The ‘Guess who Fosters’ campaign aims to bust common myths around who can foster and is the first time local authorities in Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley have come together under one umbrella. As part of the new approach there will be a dedicated website (www.fostersouthyorkshire.co.uk) which will act as a central portal for anybody in the region wanting to find out more.

It is estimated that over 100 new foster carers are needed across South Yorkshire this year. The new campaign will use current foster carers from Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley to provide a true picture of life as a foster carer. It will also actively encourage people who have counted themselves out as foster carers for whatever reason to think again about whether they could provide a loving home to child in care.

Jacqueline Wilson, Assistant Director for Children and Families Services at Doncaster Council said: ‘We very often find that there seem to be a number of myths and assumptions about who can and can’t foster. The fact is though that things such as being married – or even being in a relationship – or owning your own house are not actually pre-requisites when it comes to fostering. Single people, same sex couples and people from different ethnic backgrounds are just some of the groups now being actively encouraged to ‘think again’ about foster caring as part of this new initiative.’

There will be a series of information events hosted across the region during FosterCare Fortnight as well as a live webchat. For further details please go to www.fostersouthyorkshire.co.uk
