Don’t get a name for yourself this World Cup.
That’s the message behind a Doncaster campaign to remind people to drink sensibly and stay within the law during the World Cup.
Doncaster Council’s Public Health service, South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership and NHS Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group have joined forces to urge fans to consider the dangers of excessive drinking, at home or when out and about.
The campaign, called ‘Don’t get a name for yourself this World Cup’, highlights problems that could be caused by alcohol.
Councillor Pat Knight, cabinet member for health, said ‘The World Cup is a fantastic event. We are asking people to enjoy the sport but remember the consequences that could happen when drinking too much.
‘We don’t want anyone’s evening to turn sour and we know that people who drink too much are more likely to injure themselves, become a victim of crime or an offender.
‘Many people are not aware that by regularly drinking more than your limit you also put your long-term health in jeopardy, so stay safe this World Cup and remember the recommended limits’
Ken Wheat, South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership Manager said ‘Drinking and driving is very dangerous. Even a small amount of alcohol can affect your reaction times and hence your driving. It is not possible to say how much alcohol you can drink and stay below the limit, so it’s better not to drink at all.
‘Drinking and driving is not worth the risk. Being caught could result in being banned from driving, having points on your licence, a fine of up to £5,000, even imprisonment. This will mean increased insurance costs, loss of independence if you are banned, even the loss of your job if you are unable to drive. All this, on top of the shame of having a criminal record.’
As part of the campaign, posters have been produced and distributed to pubs, clubs and small businesses throughout Doncaster.
Football clichés have been used to highlight the different messages including:
- Drink responsibly – pace yourself and know your limits
- Don't get a penalty - Don't Drink and Drive
- Tackle your temper – don’t kick off and risk a criminal record.
- Show anger the red card – don’t be abusive and stay in control
