Doncaster will feature in community artwork displayed in York as part of the city's Tour de France celebrations.

Five Doncaster pupils and their teachers visited City of York Council to take part in a community art project celebrating the sporting event.

The Gateway PRU pupils have been studying a themed curriculum on The Yorkshire Grand Depart that has involved English,Maths,Science,Design and French.

They were invited to visit the City of York Council offices by the Director of Communities and Neighbourhoods Sally Burns and Tour de France Coordinator Keith Lumley.

After a welcome reception they were invited to design and paint a banner depicting key attractions in Doncaster and including a Gateway logo. This was completed with the help of a community artist.

The banner will be added to a collection of 40 produced by local communities in York. It will be draped over the city walls and seen by television viewers across the world on Sunday 6 July when the Grand Depart comes to York.

The Gateway banner features paintings of The Dome, the Racecourse, Robin Hood Airport and Bluebell Wood hospice.

Councillor Nuala Fennelly, cabinet member for Education and Skills, said: ‘Doncaster has many talented pupils and it is fantastic that some of their great work will be seen by people all over the world.

‘Teachers at The Gateway PRU try to give students opportunities to practice their developing skills in real life situations and this visit was a perfect opportunity to do just that.’
