Oaklands Care Provision, which offers valuable day, over-night and short stay care for disabled children, is setting up a 'Friends of Oaklands' group.

The aim of the group is to bring together families, practitioners and the community to support Oaklands and help the children and young people who use it.

It is hoped the work of the group will help provide new opportunities and future experiences for the children and young people to use and enjoy.
Oaklands has recently re-opened following a refurbishment. The unit has had a complete re-decoration, new floors throughout, new windows and doors and a new kitchen for the young people to use to develop their independence skills.

The young people are offered a range of activities within the unit including arts and crafts, computers and ipads.

Oaklands has DVD players and music systems, there is also a sensory room and ball pool. Some of the children and young people also attend youth club and sports club and staff arrange outings to parks and the seaside.

The children and young people also enjoy local walks and trips to garden centres and local shops and supermarkets.

Councillor Tony Corden, cabinet member for Services to Families, said: ‘Oaklands offers a fantastic service and staff are supportive of the parents and young people.

‘The staff are looking forward to the children and young people developing their skills in the new kitchen that has just been fitted, they will be able to plan menus and cook for themselves with supervision. Now we are looking to the future and would like people to support the new group.’

People and organisations who would like to support this local children’s care unit should contact Julie Wybrant, Registered Manager, on 01302 840340 or email
