PARKING in Doncaster is set to get easier as the local authority launches a pay by phone scheme across its car parks.
From November 1, people will be able to pay via a simple phone app at all local authority car parks and metered street parking within the town centre.
Doncaster Council is adopting the ‘RingGo’ scheme to make it easier for people to park, without the need to have the correct change.
Councillor Bill Mordue, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: ‘With this RingGo scheme it will never have been easier for people to park in the town centre. We hope it will encourage more people into Doncaster, therefore improving trading.
‘The Ring Go scheme will not replace the coin system, this will still be in use – it is just designed to give people extra options.
‘People can download a simple app onto their mobiles and with a couple of clicks of a button sort out their parking fee.’
He added: ‘RingGo is just another example of us embracing new technology as a way to make our services more efficient – and make it easier for motorists.’
The pay by phone scheme will be fully administered by RingGo and there is no cost to the Council. Parking attendants know if someone has paid from their hand held devices. People use the app for a small extra convenience fee each time they come to park. The fee is the same however long they are parking.
People can also opt for text reminders, reminding them of when their parking stay will expire and allowing them to renew by phone.
The scheme is not new to Doncaster as it has been successfully used in Doncaster Train Station car park and two other car parks. RingGo is also widely used by Rotherham Council and Sheffield City Council.
*The Council will look to reduce the number of pay and display machines but not remove them altogether.
