Doncaster Council’s Public Health team is promoting National HIV Testing Week to increase awareness of the benefits of HIV testing and encourage more HIV testing.

National HIV Testing Week, between Friday 22 and Friday 29 November, will be followed by World AIDS day on Sunday 1 December.

Doncaster Council will be holding an event which aims to promote and normalise HIV testing on Friday 6 December, at 12pm, at Doncaster Central Library.

Employees from the council and partner organisations will be walking, running or cycling to the library wearing t-shirts promoting HIV testing and handing out information leaflets. Doncaster Rovers’ mascot Donny Dog will make an appearance.

National HIV Testing Week is supported by HIV Prevention England and aims to reduce late diagnosis by ensuring more people become aware of their current HIV status.

When people are diagnosed late with HIV, delaying access to treatment, they are more likely to suffer with health complications and more likely to pass on HIV to others.

Dr Tony Baxter, Doncaster Council Director of Public Health, said: ‘If you think you have put yourself at risk, it’s much better to know your HIV status as finding out early means you can access the medicine you need to keep well and can avoid passing it on to others. Getting a HIV test is simple and routine just like any other health test’

The following organisations and people are supporting the event at Central Library: Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH), Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the Prison Service, South Yorkshire Police and GPs.
