The renowned poet, playwright, and novelist Simon Armitage visited the University Centre Doncaster for World Book Night this week.

Mr.Armitage spoke for an hour and read from his many published works. He had an audience of around 70 people enthralled with his poetry and prose, and the background stories to them and his amusing observations of life. He also spoke of his passion for walking in the Pennines. He rounded off the reading with a question and answer session.

Three English BA (Hons) students Stephanie Darke, 31, Nicola Woods, 26 and Hannah Menzies, 20, from the University Centre Doncaster, organised the event, as part of their course and were very happy with the way things went. The students, all from the Doncaster area, said,

‘We originally intended the event to be a celebration of literature and we think that the event reflected this. As students we were very humbled and grateful that Mr. Armitage agreed to attend the event, his poetry reading was engaging and accessible, not only to lifelong readers, but also newcomers to poetry and this was at the core of what we wanted to achieve. We hope that the guests enjoyed the evening as much as we enjoyed hosting it.’

Staff from Waterstones, the nation wide bookshop, were on hand with a display of Mr. Armitage books and he signed copies for the many eager admirers in the University Centre’s White Gallery.

World Book Night is a charity, founded in 2011, which aims to raise the profile of reading through a mass engagement project which works at a grass-roots level to inspire those who don’t regularly read to do so and University Centre Doncaster was proud to host this event for the third year, following its success in 2012 and 2013.
